Ellen: Ah..Well let me start. --- I'm sure Jolan, that sometime during your life, you wondered about if there was an afterlife. Obviously there is one. But it's probably different than whatever you might have been expecting. Some of what you may have been taught about the afterlife may have been inspired, but they got the details wrong or at least distored. (pause) For example, there is no hell.
Jolan: No hell? Well ummm I don't think I ever really believed...
Ellen: No hell, but neither is there a heaven.
Jolan: What!?

 This here is the core of the whole story. 
Heaven and Hell are not real, yet the after life is.
Huhh? you ask?
The core idea is that Hell serves no purpose, even as a deterrent it is useless because most
of the living have no prove it exists.
Heaven on the other hand to, well too much too soon. That is the idea of 'perfect' heaven.
We are very imperfect beings and a 'perfect' heaven would not be tolerated by our mental
facilities. If we went there in one step, it would be the death of our personalities because
to change your mental outlook enough to deal with a 'perfect' place would basically be equivalent
to erasing what in your mind blank and starting over.
The world Ellen in introducing Jolan to is an 'after life', not a perfect 'after life' it better
than life back on earth, but in stages and only minor ways.
There is still room in this after life, to be 'human'
